Next week we will be venturing into a more detailed story analysis. Before doing this, we will design the right tool.
To do an efficient story analysis, you are going to break down your entire story into steps: the step outline.
It’s a fair chunk of labour but there are two tremendous benefits:
- it creates distance, giving you a bird’s eye perspective
- it works faster than plowing through the full screenplay
A step outline is a wonderful tool. You will identify some of the structural strengths and weaknesses of the story as well as diagnose any major issues with the main character.
Over the course of the weekend, you will be building the step outline for your story. Today I will explain what a step outline is and how you write it.
