A major flaw of many early screenplays is a Hero who is not sufficiently active.
But what does this mean? How do you measure it? And more importantly: how do you fix it?
Earlier we mentioned Events and Actions. Now that you have a better understanding of the importance and the workings of POV, it is time to look further into this. Knowing the difference between Events and Actions will help you write active Heroes.
If this part of screenwriting theory initially seems simplistic and unnecessary, bare with me. Many writers keep getting this wrong, even those who have seen their work produced.
After today, not only will you be able to test whether your Hero is active or passive, you will also be able to determine whether the actions in the screenplay are sufficiently motivated.
Here are the questions we’ll answer today:
- What does Story have to do with Physics?
- What is the difference between Events and Actions?
- What are Non-Events?
- How to write the active Hero?
